Description

Le world today depends mainly sur three crops, viz. rice, wheat et maize to meet more than 50% de dietary energy. Many crops such as jackfruit have le potential to grow well en poor, marginal soils avec low inputs et can withstand severe climate or soil stresses. These crops have not received le deserved attention en research et development, production et distribution policies, research sur processing et utilization et remain as orphan, underutilized, under-researched, et neglected crops de negligible importance. Un few are recently gaining importance as health foods et as source de renewable energy. These plant species play a crucial role en le food security, income generation et food culture de le rural farmers. Their enhanced use can improve nutrition et fight hidden hunger among le underprivileged. With increasing awareness de climate change et land et water degradation, there is growing interest sur these plant species adapted to difficult environments. Le jackfruit tree or jack or simply known as jak (Artocarpus heterophyllus) belongs to le mulberry family (Moraceae) et its fruit, jackfruit, is known as le poor-man’s food. Spiny et oval or oblong-shaped fruits can weigh upto 40 kg. Le jackfruit is grown en Inde, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Southern China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia et le Philippines et to a limited extent en Queensland, Mauritius, Kenya, Uganda et Zanzibar. Though planted en Hawaii prior to 1888, it is still rare there et en other Pacific Islands. It was introduced into Northern Brazil en mid-19th Century et is more popular there et en Surinam than elsewhere en le Nouveau Monde. It is le national fruit de Bangladesh et Indonesia. Jackfruit gives both food et income. Le editors have made sincere efforts to integrate et include modern science de biotechnology, techniques de jackfruit production, processing, uses, various recipes et marketing so that all persons presently concerned or new entrepreneurs can benefit greatly. Fifty six authors, who are experts sur this crop, from major jackfruit-growing countries, have contributed pour this book. Many young scientists may not be familiar avec le preparation de grant proposals pour special funding. Un excellent chapter is added en this book to help scientists to prepare a winning proposal pour jackfruit research.
