Description

A few books in the history of mankind have been able to influence the thought and public policy all over the world. Silent Spring (1962) on environmental toxicology by American marine biologist and conservationist Rachel Carson is one such contribution. The global environmental movement as we see today is the legacy of the works such as Silent Spring which is considered as one of the most important contributions to Western literature even after five decades since its first publication. The book began with a fable for tomorrow over a fictional town which might easily be anywhere in the world as reproduced below: There was a strange stillness. The birds, for example—where had they gone? Many people spoke of them, puzzled and disturbed. The feeding stations in the backyards were deserted. The few birds seen anywhere were moribund; they trembled violently and could not fly. It was a spring without voices. On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds, doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh. Silent Spring by its forceful accounts awakened the world to the dangers of pollution, overpopulation, insecticides and chemical warfare, environmental changes and imbalance of nature emanating from human activities. Silent Spring brought a major shift in perception of the Western society. The society once defined by what it produced is now defined by the waste and pollution that it generates. The decades of 1960 and 1970 were significant historically for beginning of modern global environment movement. As scientific knowledge of the causes and consequences of environmental deterioration became more extensive and sophisticated, there was increasing concern among researchers, intellectuals and activists about the Earth’s ability to absorb the trash of human economic activity and to sustain human life. This concern contributed to the growth of grassroot environmental activities in a number of countries and the establishment of new environmental government/non-government organizations. Earth Day honoured every year on April 22 marks the birth anniversary of modern environmental movement in 1970.It is a natural outcome of this growing awareness and concern that environmental science which hardly appeared as a chapter in text books few decades back has now evolved in a separate branch of science drawing in people from multidisciplinary grounds of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering and medical science. Environmental science and engineering is a fast moving and continuously developing field. Vehicular emission regulations, industrial waste water discharge, air emissions and other environmental norms are getting real strict with time all around the world.
