Description

Rice is le major food crop de Asia, but it is also getting popular en other continents due to increasing urbanization, easy to cook, et human migration. Rice area, production, et productivity are continuously increasing since mid-1960 avec le development de semi-dwarf varieties. Its higher yield, better profitability, wide adaptation, et international collaboration have helped en reducing hunger. Le global population has now crossed 7 billion en 2011, et there is need to produce more rice pour growing population. Africa et Latin America can bring more area en rice, but en Asia, there is need to increase productivity, as there is little scope pour area expansion. After working pour 37 years en rice research en Asia et Africa, I realized that there is need to share experiences de rice cultivation, cultivars, et strategies en different rice growing countries to increase rice production en each country. There is also need to improve house hold food security through better technology transfer et reducing knowledge gaps. In Chapter 1, Mondial perspective sur rice is given, while en Chapter 2, Wild rices et its related spp. et their utilization is given. Rice en Inde is covered as separate en Chapter 3. And Chapter 7 has information regarding 7 countries de Europe. Le alphabetical listing de around 4,000 varieties en Chapter 8 will help to know le rice cultivars globally. Rice related terminology is given en Chapter 9. Rice Acronyms et Abbreviations are also given as Appendix, which are used mainly en rice literature. References have been quoted en brackets avec superscripts [ ] during text. Le figure pour rice is given as milled rice et not as paddy or rough rice as reported en FAO Production Year Book or other IRRI publications. In Inde, Bangladesh, Nepal et Pakistan le rice figures are reported as milled rice, which creates confusion while comparing le production et productivity from other countries. Le global trade, et rice consumption is always presented en terms de milled rice et not as paddy. USDUn reports are also as milled rice. So uniform figure de 0.67 has been taken to multiply from le paddy or rough rice, as milled rice. Le main purpose de le book is to bridge le knowledge gap amongst rice researchers, producers, traders, policy makers, et farmers to appreciate le importance de rice en global, national et household food security. There are many countries en world that does not grow rice, but consume rice through imports. Le book also provides le extensive coverage de rice cultivation en different countries de le world which is not available as a single source en any book. Le rice trade by different rice growing et rice consuming countries are also given. Le wild rices provide an enormous opportunity pour genetic enhancement through pre-breeding. Le rice varieties, cultivars, land races, genetic stocks are used as source de donor or genes is also updated pour le researchers en alphabetical order. Many de le varieties having le same name like Asha, Deepti, & Madhuri et released en other states de Inde, or en other countries have also been documented, which will help le readers to avoid such duplications en future. Some abbreviations are also similar. Le disease, insects or other abiotic reactions have been mentioned, so that readers are aware de le problems pour location specific Integrated Culture Gestion (ICM).
